Columbus Day in Uruguay is known as Dia de la Raza, which commemorates the relationship between the Spanish colonizers with the Native Americans and the continued link between Spain and Latin America.
This October 12th in Maldonado, Uruguay there was a special Dia de la Raza celebration in the community plaza. Hundreds of people attended the celebration, and many came to the celebration on horseback in colonial dress.
The ceremony included participation by two descendents from the bloodline of General Artigas, Uruguay’s national hero. One came from Spain and another from Paraguay.
