Castles made of sand in Punta del Este, Uruguay

Boys looking at the work of Italian sand sculptor Antonio Iannini in Punta del Este
Last Friday when I was walking along the rambla ( the beachfront promenade) on the Punta del Este Peninsula, I saw something that got my attention. It was a sand sculpture – an incredible one.

The sculptor who created the work is Antonio Iannini from Naples, Italy. He is a retired firefighter who now wanders the world’s beaches building sand sculptors. In the last five years, he has shown up on beaches in Alghero and Sardinia Italy, Benic├ássim Spain, Australia, The Island of Oahu in Hawaii, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Now, he is in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

January and February are high-season summer months in Punta del Este, with hundreds of thousands of vacationers. Many people are stopping by to admire Antonio’s work. He has a donation box set up, and asks that people who take pictures contribute.
